Constructed in 1847 the Hugh McGowan mansion was purchased by the Knights of Columbus in 1919 from Mrs. Hugh McGowan. The Knights established McGowan mansion as their clubhouse and new home to their ever expanding council, which boasted a membership of 1,000 at the time. In 1920, plans were made to expand onto the mansion. At the time of the expansion’s completion, the council stood at 2,000 members and the Knights of Columbus’ reputation for its high-society, social membership and charitable contributions was prevalent throughout the Indianapolis community. While the mansion no longer stands today, the grand auditorium, constructed in 1920 remains, where many spectacular charitable events were held in what is now known as McGowan Hall.
