Venue Description

COLUMBUS, IND. – The sodas flow and the mechanical music rolls during a visit to Zaharakos Ice Cream Parlor and Museum. This historic landmark has been featured in National Geographic, Time, and on CBS Sunday Morning.

When three brothers from Greece opened Zaharakos as a candy store on October 20, 1900, they opened what has become one of the finest ice cream parlors in America.  The double backbar from 1911 is a spectacular 50 feet of mahogany cabinets with stained glass, marble pillars, mirrors and brass. The bar’s arched mirrors frame two Mexican onyx soda fountains from the 1904 World’s Fair. The front bar has a 40-foot counter of smooth marble and onyx that supports a delicate centerpiece: the Tiffany-style lamp of stained glass and marble from 1905. Each piece provides a visual feast for the eyes.

Zaharakos has musical delight on the menu with its 1908 Welte orchestrion. This self-playing organ is designed to sound like an orchestra as it plays music from punched rolls of paper. The sound is magnificent and the experience is unforgettable.

3 Banquet/Pary Rooms. The Whitman Room features the original 1900 doors and a private soda fountain for special events (up to 28 guests). The Museum (seats up to 50) provides fascinating ways to look, listen and learn about the history of soda fountains and mechanical music. It hosts the largest pre-1900’s collection of soda fountains on public display. And the Green River Room (80 guests) is a perfect space to host wedding receptions and rehearsal dinners. Of course, if more space is needed, guests are welcome to rent the entire facility for up to 300.

Delight Your Tastebuds. You'll find something to enjoy throughout the day–from breakfast, lunch and dinner to any special treat in between. Home of the famous Gom Cheese-brr-grr and classic Orangeade drink, our menu selection consists of soups, salads, sandwiches, sodas, and sundaes. Old-fashioned sodas include the Green River soda, a refreshing lemon lime drink, and many other syrup flavors for you to create your own unique treat. Fountain delights include sundaes, shakes, malts and blended ice cream sodas–all created with premium ice cream that is made fresh at Zaharakos.
